Keith opens up with some dictionary definitions of love. According to the world it is a noun, any motion. When it is described as a verb, dictionaries refer to romantic or passionate demonstrations. The true meaning of love can be defined in this chapter. Specifically in the attributes and actions found in verses four through eight.
4 Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant,
5 does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered,
6 does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth;
7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
Nathan joints in to ad his remarks as we review more attributes about love. Other spiritual gifts will fail, or pass away. They’re not permanent, but love never fails. It never ends. While we can know what love is, we can never fully know the depths it contains. It’s like swimming in the ocean. You never swim in the entire ocean, but only a small part of it.
There will come a day when Christ returns and we see him in his perfection, or glorified body. At this time all of our partial understanding will end, and we will see him as he sees us. Think of it as another stage along the road of maturity. Just as a child matures into an adult, and puts away the things they once knew and loved. They swap it for something better.
13 But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love.
