John 13:12-20

Jesus had finished the foot washing in the upper room, and he resumed his place at the table. He asks, “What just happened? Do you know what I just did?“ The question relates to a statement he made a few moments earlier.

John 13:7 Jesus answered and said to him, “What I do you do not realize now, but you will understand hereafter.”
Teacher and lord are titles of respect. After humiliating himself and service, Jesus re-establishes the formal relationship he has with his disciples. Although he has come to serve, it is important to remind ourselves of his higher position to us.

Matthew 7:21-23
21 “Not everyone who says to Me, `Lord, Lord,´ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter.
22 “Many will say to Me on that day, `Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?´
23 “And then I will declare to them, `I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.´

Luke 6:46″Why do you call Me, `Lord, Lord,´ and do not do what I say?

Jesus explains his earlier question. The Lord and Teacher, a man in a Honored position , humbles himself and we are expected to do the same. We can see this teaching enforced and other Gospels, and the teachings of Paul.

Matthew 20:26-28
26 “It is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant,
27 and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave;
28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

Luke 22:26,27
26 “But it is not this way with you, but the one who is the greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like the servant.
27 “For who is greater, the one who reclines at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at the table? But I am among you as the one who serves.

Hebrews12:2fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, ad has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Romans 12:10,16
10 Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor;
16 Be of the same mind toward one another; do not be haughty in mind, but associate with the lowly. Do not be wise in your own estimation.

Galatians 6:1,2
1 Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted.
2 Bear one another’s burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ.

The expectation is to follow him and humility.

Romans 15:5 Now may the God who gives perseverance and encouragement grant you to be of the same mind with one another according to Christ Jesus,

1 Peter 3:17,18
17 For it is better, if God should will it so, that you suffer for doing what is right rather than for doing what is wrong.
18 For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit;

Jesus makes a true statement. As a student, slave , or the one being sent , don’t expect better treatment than the Lord and Master takes upon himself . Jesus knew about his coming crucifixion, as his followers, don’t expect better treatment than he experienced. we may not be called To suffer in that way, but why should we expect better ?

Luke 6:40 “A pupil is not above his teacher; but everyone, after he has been fully trained, will be like his teacher.

happiness, or being blessed will be the result of humble acts.

Psalms 119:1-5
1 <> How blessed are those whose way is blameless,
Who walk in the law of the LORD.
2 How blessed are those who observe His testimonies,
Who seek Him with all their heart.
3 They also do no unrighteousness;
They walk in His ways.
4 You have ordained Your precepts,
That we should keep them diligently.
5 Oh that my ways may be established To keep Your statutes!

Matthew 7:24,25
24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock.
25 “And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock.

Revelation 22:14 Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter by the gates into the city.

Jesus message was for his true disciples. By this time he knew that his betrayer was already in action. J Vernon McGee claims this statement in verse 18 INDICATES Judas may have Artie left the room . At any rate, at this point Judas was a lost cause.

Hebrews 4:13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.

Jesus knew his time was at hand . He was trying to give his followers a heads up, and not to be surprised when it happens.

what was going to happen? Why didn’t he just come out and say it ?

he could only do what he was told to by the father .

John 8:23,24 And He was saying to them, “You are from below, I am from above; you are of this world, I am not of this world.

Isaiah 43:10 “You are My witnesses,” declares the LORD, “And My servant whom I have chosen, So that you may know and believe Me And understand that I am He. Before Me there was no God formed, And there will be none after Me.

Another true statement, Jesus is trying to assure his followers. Reality check, not everyone will like you, but those who will accept his message will also except the father.

John 12:44-48
44 And Jesus cried out and said, “He who believes in Me, does not believe in Me but in Him who sent Me.
45 “He who sees Me sees the One who sent Me.
46 “I have come as Light into the world, so that everyone who believes in Me will not remain in darkness.
47 “If anyone hears My sayings and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world.
48 “He who rejects Me and does not receive My sayings, has one who judges him; the word I spoke is what will judge him at the last day.
