In a solo episode, Keith shares some random thoughts on a hot button topic in our world today. Racial issues affect all aspects of society, but people often talk past each other and don’t take time to have an honest dialog.

How do white people see the issue of race in America?

The nation was founded, beginning with the Declaration of Independence, breaking from the tyranny and oppression of England. The founding was quickly followed by establishing the Continental Congress, and other documents and writings that led to the Constitution. Tested by the War of 1812, a nation is born, based on a republican democracy.

America became a land of opportunity for all comers, where anyone could start with nothing and become prosperous. Concepts of freedom, liberty, justice, and capitalism are a way of life.

The founding documents were made in light of ending slavery, an institution begun under the king of England. It wasn’t the king, or a nation as much as a commercial prospect. Slavery started by merchants looking to make a dollar. They need to feed an agricultural demand in the south. By the time of the declaration of independence, slavery was ended by all the colonies except the 4 southern ones. It was ended by Brittain through its worldwide holdings in 1813. In America, it ended legally by a bloody civil war, It ended slavery, but not racism. Unwritten codes of jim crow continue.

You can’t legislate morality, only the appearance of it.

What black people claim

Racism exists by default in everybody. There’s no escaping it.

It’s prejudice since racism is about oppression and the oppressed. It is about who has power.

The concept is that capitalism is bad since it grew out of colonization. It’s unfairly weighted to the oppressed class who invented it. Colonization is bad since it was built on the backs of slaves. Only considering that blacks were slaves, and no other races adds to some historical deception.

The idea that America was founded in 1619, not 1776, contributes to some historic falsehoods. The idea though is that blacks have been taken advantage of ever since.

notes:

while the first slaves came to the continent in 1619, at best there were only loosely associated colonies, ruled under Britain.
slavery had already been in practice by both natives and Europeans before this time. in Africa, and elsewhere blacks enslaved blacks.

one big difference in slavery in America is that with blacks it became permanent. Often slavery was a temporary thing. A person could earn their way out of it. I’m not sure why blacks were considered permanent property in southern colonies. If someone knows, clue me in.

Colonization is bad. Not only because of slavery but for the native people imn general. It takes all the valuable resources out of the country, to send overseas to the ruling class. It leaves nothing for the natives who were robbed. This is why European settlers in the colonies rebelled. They had become native in the new land and saw the best of the resources go away. The European settlers wanted the chance, even for the slaves, to have the opportunity to succeed.

Colonization wasn’t invented by white people. They were just good at it. They were successful, as long as the target area wasn’t very populated, or was easy to control.

Is everyone racist, or prejudice? yes. People tend to gravitate to others who are similar to them. Does this make us bad? No. There is only one human race.

While being diverse in culture, and personal preference, it is still possible to interact and unite to meet common needs.
