Based on an eight-day devotional series freely offered by Lifeway. It was for use by anyone who wanted to use it during the covid lockdown during Easter in 2021. Talking points in the episode and show notes are my own. Additional questions are from the devotion series. Each of these installments combines 2 of the daily sessions.

DAY FIVE

ONE WEIGHTY MEAL:

Mark 14:18-25 NASB

18 As they were reclining at the table and eating, Jesus said,
“Truly I say to you that one of you will betray Me –one who is eating with Me.”
19 They began to be grieved and to say to Him one by one,
“Surely not I?”
20 And He said to them,
“It is one of the twelve, one who dips with Me in the bowl.
21 “For the Son of Man is to go just as it is written of Him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born.”
22 While they were eating, He took some bread, and after a blessing, He broke it, and gave it to them, and said,
“Take it; this is My body.”
23 And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, and they all drank from it.
24 And He said to them,
“This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.
25 “Truly I say to you, I will never again drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”
“As they were eating, he took bread, blessed and broke it, gave it to them, and said,
‘Take it; this is my body.’
Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it. He said to them,
‘This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. Truly I tell you, I will no longer drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.’”
Mark 14:22-25 CSB

The final meal of Christ was multifaceted. His followers remember, celebrate, and proclaim this final meal. every action and every word of Jesus is to be recalled by his followers until His return.

The weight of the Lord’s Supper also can’t be understated.

  • Jesus is the Sacrificial Lamb, with His body broken and His blood poured out for all. (1 John 2:2).
  • In Christ, we have the Great High Priest and the Great High Sacrifice. (Heb. 9:11-12).
  • Forgiveness is through the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. (John 1:29).
  • In Him, we are redeemed by His blood, the forgiveness of sins. (Eph. 1:7).

The way of salvation is through Jesus, and the Lord’s Supper points to this theological truth.
As you remember the Lord’s Supper, be sure not to lose the significance of the Supper. Examine yourself, take the elements with humble soberness, and make every attempt to preserve peace and unity with others.

And as you do that, may the beauty of Christ be reflected in your time remembering Him!

QUESTIONS

  1. Read about the Lord’s Supper. Take note of how each description enhances the closeness that Jesus had with His disciples. References: 1 Corinthians 11:23-34, Matthew 26:20-30, Mark 14:22-26,
    • On Passover evening, he shared a meal with his disciples.
    • He revealed his betrayal and suffering.
    • He described the elements of bread and wine as his body and blood.
    • He would never eat this meal again until he came again.
    • Be solemn, be humble and examine yourself rightly. Judgment is on the heads of those who partake.
  2. What does it mean for Christians to examine themselves before taking the Lord’s Supper (1 Cor. 11:28-29)?
    • Judgment for sin is on us all.
    • Rightly examining, having a humble heart, understanding the price he paid for eternal sins, means forgiveness from guilt and judgment.

DAY SIX

FOREVER CHANGED:

“Jesus let out a loud cry and breathed his last.
Then the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.”
Mark 15:37-38 CSB

It was the day that would become like night. There was darkness over the land until around three in the afternoon. Chaotic hatred spilled out from the crowd. Jesus was condemned to the most painful, gut-wrenching, suffocating death that mankind had ever come up with.

Jesus cried out and breathed His last. After His cry came the splitting of the curtain in the temple. It ripped from top to bottom as the old became new. No longer would there need to be a sacrifice in the holy of holies because Jesus did it once for all?

Just as was done on that fateful day.

Good Friday is not a day you would think would be “good.” Yet it was the day on which God made a way for all to come to Him who will believe in His Son.

QUESTIONS

  1. What is the significance of the temple curtain being torn in two?
  2. Look up and meditate on the seven sayings of Christ on the cross (found in Luke 23:34,43,46; John 19:26-28,30; Matt. 27:46/Mark 15:34),

    Luke 23:34,43,46 NASB
    34 But Jesus was saying,
“Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.”
And they cast lots, dividing up His garments among themselves.
43 And He said to him, “Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise.”
46 And Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said,
“Father, INTO YOUR HANDS I COMMIT MY SPIRIT.”
Having said this, He breathed His last.

    John 19:26-28,30 NASB
26 When Jesus then saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother,
    “Woman, behold, your son!”
27 Then He said to the disciple,
    “Behold, your mother!”
From that hour the disciple took her into his household.
28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, to fulfill the Scripture, said,
    “I am thirsty.”
30 Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said,
    “It is finished!”
And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.

    Matthew 27:46 NASB
About the ninth hour, Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying,
    “ELI, ELI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?”
    that is,
“MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?”

    Mark 15:34 NASB
At the ninth hour, Jesus cried out with a loud voice,
    “ELOI, ELOI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?”
    which is translated,
“MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?”

  3. How does the suffering of Christ give you hope for the future?
