Session 8 John 6:26-40

WANTS? (JOHN 6:26-29)

what Jesus revealed about Himself.

26 Jesus answered,
“Truly I tell you, you are looking for me,
not because you saw the signs,
but because you ate the loaves and were filled.
27 Don’t work for the food that perishes
but for the food that lasts for eternal life,
which the Son of Man will give you,
because God the Father has set his seal of approval on him.”

28 “What can we do to perform the works of God?” they asked.
29 Jesus replied,
“This is the work of God —
that you believe in the one he has sent.”

ASK:

• Why were the people following Jesus?
• What indications do you see that the crowds did not understand Jesus’s true identity? (p. 71)

Emphasize Jesus’s description of the people’s motives (v. 26).

Note that the crowd was focused on physical satisfaction.

Avoid the implication that Jesus did not care about physical needs.
Rather, emphasize that Jesus offered something superior to physical satisfaction.

Guide

• the Son of Man will give “food that lasts.”
• There is nothing to be earned—it is given.
• the work involved is to believe in the one God has sent.
• This is consistent that salvation is made possible by believing in Jesus
• (John 3:16;
  "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
• Acts 16:31;
  "They said, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household."
• Romanns 10:9-10).
  "that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord,
  and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;
  10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness,
  and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.

TRANSITION:

Jesus had fed more than 5,000 people,
yet the people still wanted more.
They demanded a sign,
but, even then, they were focused on their physical needs.
