Usually, I take some time and make an effort to beautify my notes a little bit. Since I’m in a bit of a rush, here’s what my raw notes look like as I’m recording my podcast.

Exodus 20:8-11 NASB

8 “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

  • What is it mean to remember?
  • Strong’s Dictionary:

    properly, to mark (so as to be recognized), i.e. to remember;
    by implication, to mention;
    also to burn [incense],
    (make) mention (of), be mindful, recount, record(-er), remember, make to be remembered, bring (call, come, keep, put) to (in) remembrance, X still, think on, X well.

  • Holy, a verb.
  • We “holy” it by doing nothing. Relying on God’s providence.
  • Sabbath is a covenant sign, where God sanctifies.
  • Punishment for breaking it is the death penalty.

9 “Six days you shall labor and do all your work,

  • What’s the difference between labor and your work?
  • Labor. Related to the word slave.
  • Work. Related to the word for occupation.
  • Jesus was often in trouble for healing on the Sabbath. Was it his work or labor? Or something else?

10 but the seventh day is a sabbath of the LORD your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male or your female servant or your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you.

  • The Sabbath is a covenant sign between God and man.
  • Working, gathering sticks. Unproductive work on the Sabbath is forbidden, and warrants the death penalty.
  • Even the women attending Jesus after the crucifixion did not work on the Sabbath.
  • Servant. Male and female servants were also to rest.
  • The purpose. To remind them they were once also slaves in Egypt.

11 “For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore, the LORD blessed the sabbath day and made it holy.

  • All that is in creation belongs to God.
  • The Sabbath is made for man, not man for the Sabbath.
