A former co-host returns, and we share thoughts on what the culture means when it defines the term “woke”. First, Keith tells about the recent web page weirdness, rebuilding, and a new newsletter series we just started. Sign up, check it out and share the Gospel with a friend.
Turning to our main topic, Chris and Keith try to define what being woke is all about. Where did the term come from, and when did it come into wide usage? Is the word, or the concept it represents mentioned in the bible? Yes, and no. The word, as culture uses it is an adjective. It describes some other action or activism. It’s not the thing, but it is something of a badge to wear in indicating awareness of the thing. To focus on waking is to blows smoke and obscure the issue,
The word woke is the past tense of awake. In the past tense form of the word, it does not appear in scripture. In the correct tense of the word it is used several times and has a consistent purpose. It is always a verb and is the activism itself, not a pointer to describe the activity.
In an illustration from nature, we look at one use of how God ordains what it means to be awake. Stirred up for a purpose, facing terrifying situations, yet under the loving watchful care of our creator. It may seem that God wakens us to send us out to face extreme perils, but the whole time he is always near to catch us as we fall. We may not be ready when those hard times hit, but in the repeated exercise, our strength develops until we discover our purpose and can soar under the power of our wings.
That’s the biblical meaning of being woke. Being activated for a purpose. It’s a natural thing, and not something contrived or invented in the mind of society.
