or, the Value of the Individual.
In another live episode, Nathan leads the way as he and Keith explore the sanctity of life and the value of each individual. We use his sermon notes on Matthew 13 to guide us.
What makes people valuable?
Some think our value comes with our desirability, our abilities or our contributions to society.
Looking at it this way, the growing trend toward abuse, abortion, and euthanasia would seem more logical.
However, God’s word says every soul has value, and it’s not for the reasons I just nut out .
The Parable of Treasure in the Field.
Matthew 13:44-46
one point of note is that it’s not just the treasure, the one who found it saw enough value to purchase the entire field. The application for us today is that Christ saw this kind of value in each one of us. He gave everything, his life, as the ransom price to purchase the entire field.
Potential, or the Parable of the Mustard Seed.
Matthew 13:31, 32
Something as small as his seed can produce a huge plant. The potential each human life has is similar in that God doesn’t look at us as the seed. He sees the potential of a full-grown life that we have yet to see.
The Parable of Leaven
Matthew 13:33
In a similar way, something as small as the microbes in a lump of leaven can have an effect in a lump of dough. In its first condition, it lies dormant and seems to have not much in the way of purpose. Once it’s activated and applied, its purpose is realized.
When we apply God’s purpose of salvation to human life, our purpose ends in glorification. In 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 Paul claims that our bodies become the temple of God, and the Holy Spirit lives within us.
Human life has purpose. It has more value than any form of art that we tend to elevate. Humans are the only beings in the universe created in the image of God.
The things that humans count valuable are few, limited and rare. God sees every human life is valuable.
