A Removed Stone (John 20:1-2)

Mary Magdalene’s reaction to the stone being removed.

1 On the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark. She saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. 2 So she went running to Simon Peter and to the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said to them, “They’ve taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they’ve put him!”

Application Point:

Everyone needs to inquire about the truth of Jesus’s resurrection.

Review:

Highlight Jesus’s appearance to Mary Magdalene and use content from “Key Person: Mary Magdalene” in the Leader Guide to share information about her. Use “Did You Know?” (PSG, p. 48) to supplement the discussion.

Record:

Beside Mary’s name, write “unsure” and “fearful.” Lead a brief discussion about why those words accurately described Mary’s feelings. Encourage the group to scan the content for verse 2 on page 49 of the PSG and to identify possible explanations that could have gone through Mary’s mind.
