Session 2

Alone (Genesis 2:18-20)

God brought all the animals before Adam.

18 Then the Lord God said,
“It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper corresponding to him.”
19 The Lord God formed out of the ground every wild animal and every bird of the sky,
and brought each to the man to see what he would call it. And whatever the man called a living creature, that was its name.
20 The man gave names to all the livestock, to the birds of the sky, and to every wild animal;
but for the man no helper was found corresponding to him.

Emphasize:

explore man’s need for a corresponding helper in verse 18.

Ask:

while no animal was a good fit for Adam, God was preparing Adam for the perfect helper.

Key Phrase

Corresponding to him

The animals that Adam named were of a different flesh and nature than he was (1 Cor. 15:39). The assumption here is that each male animal had its corresponding female helper/mate. But none of them were appropriate for Adam. Of course, God already knew what He was going to do (Gen 2:18). He was just preparing Adam for what was coming.

Transition:

God provided food, resources, and work for Adam.
Next, God would provide a mate for Adam.
