Session 10 | Jeremiah 36:19-31

REPLACED (JER. 36:27-31)

God’s next message to King Jehoiakim.

27 After the king had burned the scroll
and the words Baruch had written at Jeremiah’s dictation, the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah:
28 “Take another scroll, and once again write on it the original words
that were on the original scroll that King Jehoiakim of Judah burned.”

29 “‘You are to proclaim concerning King Jehoiakim of Judah,
‘This is what the LORD says:
You have burned the scroll, asking,
“Why have you written on it that the king of Babylon will certainly come and destroy this land and cause it to be without people or animals?”’”

30 “‘Therefore, this is what the LORD says concerning King Jehoiakim of Judah:
He will have no one to sit on David’s throne, and his corpse will be thrown out to be exposed to the heat of day and the frost of night.’”

31 “‘I will punish him, his descendants, and his officers for their iniquity.
I will bring on them, on the residents of Jerusalem, and on the people of Judah
all the disaster, which I warned them about but they did not listen.’”

LIST:

Note that God directed Jeremiah to create a new scroll with the same message written on it.
God’s Judgment,

Note that the king was a powerful man, but God’s judgment was ever greater.

DISCUSS:

TRANSITION:

The wickedness of Jehoiakim’s actions
demanded a severe response from God.
While all the people of Judah would experience punishment for their disobedience,
God’s anger against Jehoiakim would be humiliating.

CHALLENGE

EVALUATE:

Direct the group to work in pairs to read and share responses to the Apply the Text section on page 91:
Reflect on the relationship between having confidence in God’s Word and sharing it with others.
What actions can you take to reflect your confidence in God’s Word?
With whom do you need to share God’s truth this week? (p. 91)

APPLY:

Guide the group to discuss the activity under Apply the Text on page 87:
God invites all believers to share in delivering His Word wherever and however we can.
Discuss the ways your group can be involved in faithfully delivering God’s Word.

PRAY:

Encourage the group to jot down the name of at least one person they could share God’s Word with this week in the margin of their DDGs.
Close in prayer,
thanking God for the truth and power of His Word and
praying for opportunities to share with others.

AFTER THE SESSION

Reinforce the session by challenging the group to think of tangible ways they can confidently share God’s Word with people they might encounter this week.
