TRAPPED (JOHN 8:3-6)

the Pharisees’ attitude toward the woman.

3 Then the scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman caught in adultery,
making her stand in the center.

4 “Teacher,” they said to him,
“this woman was caught in the act of committing adultery.

5 In the law Moses commanded us to stone such women.
So what do you say?”
6 They asked this to trap him, in order that they might have evidence to accuse him.
Jesus stooped down and started writing on the ground with his finger.

CONSIDER:

“Righteous” and “Unrighteous” on the other.
consider whether the Pharisees’ actions were righteous or unrighteous.

Discuss how following God’s law is righteous
but that the motivation of the Pharisees was unrighteous.

“self-righteous” as a description of the Pharisees.

TRANSITION:

Jesus recognized the leaders’ impure motives.
By writing in the dirt, He took control of the situation
and set up His response on His own terms—not the terms His opponents were pushing.
