Session 2 John 1:40-51

COME AND SEE

ENGAGE

share a time that a product or experience failed
to live up to its promises or reviews.

DISCUSS:

direct attention to the introductory paragraph on page 21.

Ask:

just as we can become skeptical of products and reviews
some people become skeptical about Jesus
due to past experiences with religion
or people who claim to follow Him.

TRANSITION:

none of us are responsible for having all the answers
when others are skeptical about following Jesus.
But we do have a responsibility to invite others
to “come and see” Jesus for themselves.

In this session, we will see how some early disciples responded to this simple invitation.

EXPLORE

INTRODUCE:

explain how John the Baptist pointed others to Jesus.

two of John’s own disciples immediately followed Jesus.
One of these was Andrew, Simon’s brother.
The other is not identified but was likely John,
the writer of this Gospel.

REVIEW:

scan verses 29-39
find titles or descriptions of Jesus.

John 1

29 The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said,
"Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
30 "This is He on behalf of whom I said,
`After me comes a Man who has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.´
31 "I did not recognize Him, but so that He might be manifested to Israel,
I came baptizing in water."
32 John testified saying,
"I have seen the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him.
33 "I did not recognize Him,
but He who sent me to baptize in water said to me,
`He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him,
this is the One who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.´
34 "I myself have seen, and have testified
that this is the Son of God."

35 Again the next day John was standing with two of his disciples,
36 and he looked at Jesus as He walked, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God!"
37 The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.
38 And Jesus turned and saw them following, and said to them,
"What do you seek?"
They said to Him, "Rabbi (which translated means Teacher),
where are You staying?"
39 He said to them, "Come, and you will see."
So they came and saw where He was staying;
and they stayed with Him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.

Note

John the Baptist identified Him as “Son of God” and “Lamb of God,”
while John’s disciples called Jesus “Rabbi.”

CHALLENGE:

As we read John 1:40-51, look for other titles given to Jesus.
We will consider what each one reveals about Jesus
and about the person who attributed it to Jesus.
