Session 11 Micah 3:1-12

RESPONSIBILITY DECLARED (MICAH 3:9-12)

Micah’s closing words to the leaders.

9 Listen to this, leaders of the house of Jacob, you rulers of the house of Israel,
who abhor justice and pervert everything that is right,
10 who build Zion with bloodshed and Jerusalem with injustice.
11 Her leaders issue rulings for a bribe, her priests teach for payment,
and her prophets practice divination for silver.
Yet they lean on the LORD, saying,
“Isn’t the LORD among us? No disaster will overtake us.”

12 Therefore, because of you, Zion will be plowed like a field,
Jerusalem will become ruins, and the temple’s mountain will be a high thicket.

IDENTIFY:

identify the specific charges against the leaders and the result of their actions.

DISCUSS:

TRANSITION:

God promised to bring judgment,
but He also promised to gather a remnant from among them
and to serve as their Leader (2:12-13).
It’s this reference to God as Leader
that turns the attention to the self-serving leaders who were leading Judah astray.

CHALLENGE

REFLECT:

Remind the group of the opening illustration (p. 93).
Lead them to discuss truths from this session
that will help them realize the importance of and need for godly leaders among God’s people
to help them stay on His path.

DISCUSS:

Lead the group to discuss the question set under Apply the Text on page 95:
Discuss as a group how believers can stand for God’s truth in today’s world.
What role does the group play in making sure believers understand God’s truth?
How can the group encourage each other to stand for God’s truth?

PRAY:

Conclude with a time of silent prayer,
encouraging the group to ask God what needs to change in our lives for us
to be more godly leaders and examples.
Close the time by thanking God for His provision of godly leaders in our lives.

AFTER THE SESSION

Reinforce the study by examining your own life for areas of leadership that need to be addressed. Draft a plan for strengthening the areas you identified.
