Joe Louis, was the heavyweight boxing champion from 1937-1949.
On June 20, 1946, The New York Times quoted him as saying,

“He can run, but he can’t hide.”

He was referencing a bout where his opponent thought he might outmaneuver Joe Louis
by staying away from him in the ring. His strategy didn’t work, and he was “found” and knocked out.

TRANSITION:

Today’s session begins a study of Jonah.
Jonah clearly wanted to hide from God and avoid doing what God was asking him to do.
We will discover how successful his plan was as we examine Jonah 1–2.

point out the New Testament passage that quotes the book of Jonah as you introduce your study of Jonah.

Matthew 12:40 NASB

40 for just as JONAH WAS THREE DAYS AND THREE NIGHTS IN THE BELLY OF THE SEA MONSTER,
so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

OVERVIEW:

In verse 9, Jonah described himself as a Hebrew who worshiped Yahweh.
He acknowledged that Yahweh is Lord over heaven and earth, controlling all creation.

TRANSITION:

Jonah recognized the sovereignty of God,
but he still tried to run from something he didn’t want to do.
He was “found,” and discovered there was no running from God.
