Session 7 1 Kings 19:9-18
listen for the instructions God gave Elijah and the promise He made to him.
15 Then the LORD said to him,
“Go and return by the way you came
to the Wilderness of Damascus.
When you arrive, you are to anoint Hazael as king over Aram.
16 You are to anoint Jehu son of Nimshi as king over Israel
and Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel-meholah as prophet in your place.
17 Then Jehu will put to death whoever escapes the sword of Hazael,
and Elisha will put to death whoever escapes the sword of Jehu.18 But I will leave seven thousand in Israel —
every knee that has not bowed to Baal and every mouth that has not kissed him.”Emphasize:
God did not correct Elijah for being afraid or feeling such a heavy load of despair.
What God did do was give Elijah some tasks to complete.Discuss:
- How can being reminded that God has a work for us to do
serve as a motivator that can help lift us out of despair? (p. 63)Reread:

- How is God’s statement here a response to Elijah’s words earlier in verses 10 and 14?

- How did knowing about God having a people who would stand beside him encouraged Elijah for the work yet ahead? (p. 63)
Transition:
After God gave the instructions,
Elijah moved promptly to obey,
finding Elisha and naming him as his successor.
King Ahab’s reign was coming to an end.
Refocused on God’s purposes for his life,
