Session 7 1 Kings 19:9-18

REALITY DEFINED (1 KINGS 19:15-18)

listen for the instructions God gave Elijah and the promise He made to him.

15 Then the LORD said to him,
“Go and return by the way you came
to the Wilderness of Damascus.
When you arrive, you are to anoint Hazael as king over Aram.
16 You are to anoint Jehu son of Nimshi as king over Israel
and Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel-meholah as prophet in your place.
17 Then Jehu will put to death whoever escapes the sword of Hazael,
and Elisha will put to death whoever escapes the sword of Jehu.

18 But I will leave seven thousand in Israel —
every knee that has not bowed to Baal and every mouth that has not kissed him.”

Emphasize:

God did not correct Elijah for being afraid or feeling such a heavy load of despair.
What God did do was give Elijah some tasks to complete.

Transition:

After God gave the instructions,
Elijah moved promptly to obey,
finding Elisha and naming him as his successor.
King Ahab’s reign was coming to an end.
Refocused on God’s purposes for his life,
Elijah found new hope and strength.

SUMMARIZE AND CHALLENGE

Review:

As you scan 1 Kings 19:9-18,
note God’s actions.
How does each action point to renewing Elijah’s focus on God’s purposes?

Memorize:

Distribute copies of Pack Item 8 (Handout: Memory Verses Bookmark).
Encourage each person to memorize the verse
to provide encouragement any times they might be feeling discouraged.

Evaluate:

Guide the group to complete the second question set on page 64:
What actions can you take to prepare yourself to hear God’s whisper?
Encourage them to write a response to the question
in the margin of their book.

Pray:

Close in prayer,
thanking God for His presence with us
in the moments of victory and the moments of despair.
Pray that we will be listening for His whisper voice.
Thank Him for the comfort and encouragement He brings to our hearts.

AFTER THE SESSION

Reinforce the session by texting or emailing this week’s memory verse, Psalm 42:5, to the group.
