Session 6 1 Kings 18:25-39

PREPARATION (1 KINGS 18:30-35)

listen for how Elijah rebuilt the altar.
Note that the crowd watching Elijah had to number in the thousands.

30 Then Elijah said to all the people,
“Come near me.”
So all the people approached him. Then he repaired the LORD’s altar that had been torn down:
31 Elijah took twelve stones — according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob,
to whom the word of the LORD had come, saying,
“Israel will be your name” — ! `32 and he built an altar with the stones in the name of the LORD.
Then he made a trench around the altar large enough to hold about four gallons.
33 Next, he arranged the wood, cut up the bull,
and placed it on the wood. He said,
“Fill four water pots with water and pour it on the offering
to be burned and on the wood.”
34 Then he said,
“A second time!”
and they did it a second time. And then he said,
“A third time! ”
and they did it a third time.
35 So the water ran all around the altar;
he even filled the trench with water.

Highlight:

Using the repaired altar was Elijah’s way of separating himself and the people from Baal….
Part of Elijah’s charge against the Israelites
had been that they had attempted to blend the worship of Baal
with the worship of God.

They had wanted to sit on both stools.
Elijah knew, though, that the people could not be loyal both to Baal and to God.

Emphasize:

the Key Doctrine (God):
There is one and only one living and true God.
(Psalm 83:18, John 17:3). (p. 55)

Psalms 83:18 NASB

That they may know that You alone, whose name is the LORD,
Are the Most High over all the earth.

John 17:3

"This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have
sent.

Transition: !

Through his careful preparations around the altar,
Elijah allowed the people to see that what happened next could only occur through God’s power.
