Session 8 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11

ALERTNESS REQUIRED (1 THESS. 5:4-8)

listen for ways Paul describes how believers are to await Christ’s return.

4 But you, brothers and sisters, are not in the dark,
for this day to surprise you like a thief.
5 For you are all children of light and children of the day.
We do not belong to the night or the darkness.

6 So then, let us not sleep, like the rest,
but let us stay awake and be self-controlled.
7 For those who sleep, sleep at night,
and those who get drunk, get drunk at night.

8 But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled
and put on the armor of faith and love, and a helmet of the hope of salvation.

EMPHASIZE:

Make two columns on a board.
Label one Do and the second Do Not.
Guide the group to locate Paul’s instructions for believers on what to do and what to avoid.
Use information in the Day 3 Daily Exploration (p. 74)
to highlight:
stay awake, be self-controlled, and prepare for battle
as behaviors to do.
Reference sleep and get drunk for behaviors to avoid.

DISCUSS:

MEMORIZE:

Remind the group that 1 Thessalonians 5:8 is the memory verse for this week.
Direct the group to restate the verse in their own words and write it in the margin of their book.
Invite volunteers to share with the group.

TRANSITION:

After describing how to remain alert for Christ’s return,
Paul added encouragement.
